Jürgen Verstaen Shares His Perspective with VRT NWS on a New Drone Production Facility in Belgium

On 5 August 2026, Jürgen Verstaen, Co-Founder and Director Sales & Innovation of Unifly, was interviewed by Belgian public broadcaster VRT NWS.

The interview followed the announcement of a new drone production facility in Evergem, in the Port of Ghent. Jürgen shared his perspective on what this development could mean for Belgium, addressing local employment, the growing interest in European production, technology security and the protection of critical infrastructure.

“Personally, I see this as a positive development. Bringing employment to Belgium instead of purchasing everything abroad is clearly to our advantage. There is also a noticeable trend in Europe towards producing and purchasing more European technology. Keeping the technology within Belgium also offers an important security advantage. When drone components such as batteries, cameras and chips are purchased abroad, questions remain about how they are protected and whether external parties could potentially access the data.”

The continued development of drone manufacturing, detection technology and airspace management reflects the increasing maturity of the drone ecosystem. Each plays a different but important role in supporting the safe and responsible use of drones.

At Unifly, our focus is on enabling the safe integration of drone operations into the airspace through digital UAS Traffic Management technology. As the industry continues to evolve, collaboration between authorities, operators, manufacturers and technology providers will remain essential.
