  • The Digital European Sky EUREKA project aims to accommodate Vertiport operations in the European airspace to enable Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

  • Through the integration of vertiports into the airspace, the project will unlock the potential for safe, secure, and sustainable UAM transportation systems.

  • A consortium of 35 members from all over Europe, under the leadership of EUROCONTROL collaborates in the EUREKA project until mid-2026.

  • The project has a total investment sum of about 12 mio €, including 6,9 mio € funding from the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking (SESAR 3 JU).

Rome, June 14 - EUREKA is a Digital European Sky Fast Track Innovation and Uptake (FTIU) project: its consortium will develop in 3 years industrial solutions demonstrated in operational environment and supporting the European Union's roadmaps. EUROCONTROL leads EUREKA and together with 34 European companies that are Abionica, Aeroporti di Roma, Aena, Alliance for New Mobility Europe, ANRA, BlueNest, Boeing Aerospace Spain, CRIDA, Deep Blue, D-flight, DLR, Dronea, Droniq, DSNA, ENAC, ENAIRE, ENAV, Groupe ADP, HföD, Hologarde, IFT, INDRA, INECO, Leonardo, Lilium, NAIS, Pipistrel, SEA, SoulSoftware, Techno Sky, Unifly, Unisphere, UrbanV and Volocopter, these industry leaders are collaborating to shape the future of Urban Air Mobility and drive transformative advancements in air transportation. EUREKA receives 6.924.045 Euros from the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking and will run until mid-2026.

At its core, the EUREKA project wants to fulfil the vision of full accommodation of Urban Air Mobility by integrating vertiports into the airspace and endeavours to address challenges of tomorrow’s cities. It will do so by developing four essential SESAR solutions:

  1. Arrival/departure to/from vertiport, encompassing route and trajectory planning.

  2. Vertiport collaborative traffic management, optimizing resource utilization and capacity allocation.

  3. Vertiport disruption and emergency management, ensuring preparedness for unforeseen circumstances.

  4. Vertiport Network Flow, Capacity & Operational Management, enabling efficient coordination and operations across the vertiport network.

The project, will work in close cooperation with EASA and other international and national authorities and organisations, also contributing to the consolidation of standardisation and regulatory requirements related to Vertiports and UAM operations. The outcome of this FTIU initiative will be shared with the larger U-space/UAM community giving particular attention to the other ongoing UAM deployment initiatives, and to the rulemaking initiatives on the subject managed by the European Commission, ICAO, EUROCAE and EASA etc. This will have particular relevance for the exploitation of EUREKA results by developing standardisation and regulation recommendations that could become a reference for the expected UAM development and a boost for early UAM deployment.
